DAY 19 MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all enjoying a lovely weekend. The sun is shining brightly here but we’re not doing much more outside than walking the dog, going back and forth to the bins, planting some pansies and taking photos of my challenge efforts. It would be the perfect day for families to participate in outdoor pursuits.

I’ve spent most of the weekend doing numerous loads of washing. But while the washing machine has been whirring away, I have been messing around with art supplies. We dragged-out rubber-stamping supplies to add to the mishmash of supplies I can use to meet my self-imposed challenge. So, without further ado here is day 18’s effort …..

Day 18

And day 19’s effort …..

Day 19

I can finally admit that messing around with art supplies has tested my resolve but it has been very therapeutic as well. And I must admit that my creative juices are finally started to flow again. I’m not sure what I will be creating once this challenge is over. And if the lockdown is extended for a few more weeks after this current three weeks, I will definitely set another challenge. Stepping out of my comfort zone has been so good for me. Everybody should try this once in a while.

I mentioned last time that my Maisie was going to have a haircut. She was very hairy and it was making her rather hot at times. I was quite worried that the hot weather would set in and make her even hotter making her little heart work harder. When this opportunity came along, I couldn’t turn it down. So, here’s Maisie a couple of hours before her grooming session …..

Maisie Before

And here she is now …..

Maisie After

She no longer looks like she’s wearing Ugg boots and therefore she can grip the floor again!

It’s been a pretty good weekend so far. The weather, although not very warm, has been bright spurring me on to get a few chores done. That means more time to do a bit more art journaling this coming week. I haven’t done any sewing apart from working on a few hexies all week. I must correct that soon.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for this weekend. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 17 MESSING AROUND WITH ART SUPPLIES

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all enjoying the last day of the work week. All the days seem to blend together at the moment. And it’s a struggle to work out what day it is at the best of times nowadays.

Today is day 17 of my self-imposed messing around with art supplies. I have had quite a lot of fun trying out different supplies and techniques and there’s a lot more supplies in our stash to try out yet. So, I may just be able to see the challenge through.

So, without further ado here is today’s effort …..

Day 17

You will notice that I used up the rest of the scrap of paper I cut the partridges from yesterday. A little simple bit of weaving adds a little something to the funky background. I keep all my art journal pages simple and achievable. In time, if I decide to take up this type of craft regularly, I may attempt more complicated techniques for which I will most certainly need to actually purchase a few more supplies. It’s not like I need an excuse though.

Art Journal

Finally, the sun has come out to play. This morning was dark and dreary. Sarah and I stepped out this morning to collect our Click & Collect food order. It was rather exciting to actually head out in the car. The car spends a lot of time in the driveway nowadays. Collecting our food at the supermarket was absolute pandemonium but we got plenty of food to keep us going now for a while. Even Maisie’s food bucket is stocked up again.

And speaking of Maisie … she’s desperately in need of a haircut but her regular grooming place is shut due to circumstances beyond our control. However, my neighbour has a dog groomer who comes to his house and by using the garage as a work space is able to keep to social distancing rules and so Maisie will be clipped, short back and sides style, tomorrow. She looks like a hairy beast at the moment. I am positive she will feel like a new girly dog when her fur has been trimmed and coifed.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly love doing. I am planning on having a little break from posting tomorrow but you shall be able to read my ramblings on Sunday. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

DAY 16 MESSING AROUND WITH ART SUPPLIES

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all safe, well and in good spirits. Isn’t it amazing that we’re all working towards one goal, the same goal? We all have something in common at the moment.

So, today is day 16 of my messing around with art supplies self-imposed challenge. And I had a pretty good play this morning. Here’s my effort for today …..

Partridge

The birds happen to be cut outs of Lush gift wrap paper which one of Sarah’s Christmas present was wrapped in. I found the scraps of paper under a little pile of stuff. The paper was so colourful and cheerful that I thought I’d give it a go. The birds are partridges, a partridge in a pear tree. Fa-la-la-la-la. I have purchased absolutely nothing for this art journal. It’s amazing what you come across and with a little effort can turn it into something.

Along with finishing this art journal two-page spread, I prepped a few more in readiness for the next few days …..

Prepped a

Prepped b

Prepped c

You’ll notice that I’m not overly precious about what colour I splodge, splash and generally scrape over my art journal pages. I reckon if I layer up and embellish using co-ordinating or contrasting bits it will all come together eventually. Slowly but surely, I am learning to just let go and let it happen. After all it’s only an art journal. I must admit that I look at everything through new eyes now. I’m always on the lookout to repurpose bits and pieces in my journal. I will soon try to add scraps of fabric.

I’m halfway through my challenge already. I wonder if I’ll decide to carry on after April 30th? I might even try this type of thing using fabric. I could turn it into a wall hanging or door banner or even frame it up.

It’s very likely that our lockdown will be extended for another few weeks. It seems to be having the desired effect but we mustn’t ease off too soon as we might undo all the good that we’ve done. I guess I could manage for another three/four weeks if necessary. I might have to launch another challenge to keep my mind focused though.

I received two six packs of pansies yesterday. My neighbour managed to bulk purchase some spring bedding plants and had too many and offered the extras to me. Well you can’t imagine how pleased I am to be able to plant a few bedding plants. We had a frost recently so I’m going to wait a few more days before I plant them out just in case another frost hits over the next few days.

So, my friends, I guess that’s my report for today. It’s been a pretty good day. And it’s not over yet. I’ll be doing some simple cooking. Comfort food is much appreciated  in my household at the moment . I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND DAY 15

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all been enjoying a brilliant sunny day. It really feels like spring time here in my little corner of the northeast of England. Very welcome it is too.

So, today is day 15 of my messing around challenge. I am so surprised that I’m sticking to my self-imposed challenge. Without further ado here’s today’s effort …..

Day 15 a

And here are some pages that I prepped ready for embellishing over the next couple of days …..

Prepped Art Journal Page 1

Prepped Art Journal Page 2

I’m finding that art journaling is giving me a way to express myself during this strange time. If I’m honest, life isn’t all that different that it was before the lockdown. I generally live a quiet simple life. I used to go out a couple of times a month to join like-minded ladies to have a stitch and natter session. I used to go out food shopping as and when there was a need. I don’t have any family here so that’s no different. So, all in all it’s just a bit quieter which I am finally getting used to. The new normal has arrived.

There’s been a little tidying going on. My Sarah has tidied her workspace …

Pegboard 2

Pegboard 1

These Ikea pegboards are so versatile. She has set this board up on the end of her sewing machine table. One side holds her thread and the other side her rulers and scissor etc. What a great way to store tools and sewing notions.

So, I guess that’s my report for today. All in all, it’s been a pretty good day. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you really enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE DAY 14

Hello my lovelies. I hope you enjoying some spring time sunshine. It’s lovely here this afternoon. After waking up to frost this morning I had no hope of having a beautiful sunny day.

Oh yes, folks it’s day 14 of my Messing Around Challenge. I’m sticking to my plan. Well actually there is no plan, just a little bit of hope that I will meet the challenge which I set myself with some sort of success. I started this challenge because I couldn’t concentrate on anything for very long. I thought playing around with art supplies might help me focus on something. So far so good. So, without further ado here’s todays effort …..

Day 14

Somehow, I feel that these pages aren’t quite finished yet. Today’s effort needs a little more adorning. I can come back to it when I find something to add to it.

When I headed out to take a photo of today’s art journal pages, I discovered some progress in the garden …..

Clematis

This clematis is draped over a rickety old rose arch type structure. It grows like mad every year except that I lopped quite a lot of it off last year because it was well overgrown and casting quite a lot of shade onto my little back garden. It seems that this clematis is well determined to grow even though I slowed down it’s progress. I really look forward to seeing these blooms fully open and gracing my rose arch offering hope of good things to come.

The next thing I discovered if this Japanese Acer. It seems that before Easter the branches were in bud only. Now today after a little sunshine the leaves are open and bursting with colour …..

Acer

It makes the garden jolly colourful. And colourful is what we need right not with being tethered to our home and garden. And let’s hope the sunshine keeps coming.

Life in lockdown is getting more bearable with each passing day. The government has warned us not to expect any easing of lockdown measures anytime soon. I’m no expert but I expect that we’ll be staying home to stay safe for another month or so at the very least.

Well that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE DAY 13

Hello my lovelies. It’s another bank holiday here in England. I hope you’re all having a super fine day. It’s overcast and pretty cold here in my little corner of the northeast of England today.

I seem to be sticking to my Messing Around Challenge. It’s now day 13. Here’s how I played with my art journal today …..

Day 13 Journal Page

The blue splodges are actually foil from my Easter eggs!!! And here’s the page I started prepping for tomorrow’s effort …..

Day 13 Prepped Page

I try to do a little prepping everyday because things take a while to dry to my liking. With layering up papers, adding paint etc the pages don’t sit flat anymore. It bothered me at first but now I realise that it’s a sign of the effort I put into something that’s so far out of my comfort zone …..

Art Journal

Over the last 13 days I have worked at my dining table. Well I’m thinking about setting up a little station somewhere in the house. It would mean that I can leave my art supplies at my workstation instead of having to put everything away after each session.

To me the rainbow the is a sign of hope. Of late, the rainbow has become a sign for the #NHS. Windows everywhere are plastered with rainbows drawn by children and adults alike. Soooo, my Sarah gathered up some of her yarn stash and crocheted these …..

Rainbows

And the crocheted rainbows are now hanging in our front window as a sign of hope and solidarity. After all we’re all in this together.

I discovered something this afternoon while I was outside taking photos of my art journal. My first peony bloom has made an appearance. It seems to me that it’s a bit early for peonies to bloom but I’m glad it did. The peony is my favourite flower. I have a total of four different peony shrubs which also include a tree. I hope my peonies bloom for a good long season this year.

Peony

So, today is the last day of a long holiday weekend. Tomorrow we go back to the new normal of staying home, protecting the NHS and staying safe. For all those who are staying home, I think you’re all heroes helping to slow down the pandemic.

Well, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy doing. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND CHALLENGE

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all have a very happy chocolate bunny infused Sunday. Sarah and I have both had a little chocolate today. It was delish.

So far, the bank holiday weekend has been pretty good. I did a few household chores as well as embellishing a couple of art journal pages yesterday and today. It’s funny that I seem to have grown a little more enthusiastic with every art journal page I work on.

Day 12 Tag

Day 11 Bunny

Sarah has very kindly fished out all kinds of supplies she thinks I might be able to use. For example, gelli plate. I’m not sure how exactly I will use it yet but I have had a good little look online to see how others have played with it.

Gelli Plate

Now most of you already know that my preferred medium is fabric. I design and make quilts. I quilt said quilts either by machine and by hand. Now that I have been playing with all things paper crafty, I think I would like to use similar techniques with fabric. I have dabbled with fabric crafty art in the past but not for a long time. Some of the art journal pages I have produced could possibly be reproduced in fabric. With the current lockdown, I might just have enough time and enthusiasm left to dig out some calico and have a go. Most of what I produced in paper form is simple layering up. Surely, I can do the same in fabric form. Watch this space my friends. I think the time has come to teach an old dog a few new tricks. Google, YouTube and Pinterest are probably a great resource for what I’m thinking of attempting.

It’s been a good weekend so far. One more day left before things go back to regular lockdown. It seems like everyday is the same not matter what day it is these days. Does anyone else feel like this???

Well, I guess that my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly love doing. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND DAY 10

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’re all having a super fine Friday in these very strange times. I just so happens that today and Monday are bank holidays here in England. It’s Easter weekend. And it will be different from any other Easter I have experienced. There won’t be a trip to the garden centre to purchase spring/summer bedding plants because they’re not open. We will manage to make our gardens look interesting somehow. Challenge accepted!

Today is day 10 of Messing Around Challenge. Here are the supplies I used to prep a couple of art journal pages …..

Day 10 c

There are still quite a few art supplies from my stash that I haven’t used yet but I will have to dig around to find them. I might even beg a few bits from Sarah’s stash. The art bars were fun to use but the stencils are my favourite. Instant effect without much effort. So, without further ado here are the pages I prepped today …..

Day 10 a

Day 10

As per usual, I have no idea how or what I will add to these pages but I know it’s going to be fun. I may use word prompts to build around. The words may reflect a sign of the times.

I guess that’s another week shot to hell. It seems the days are speeding by more quickly now that I have a routine to follow. My morning charity work is coming to completion for the season. I will have to find another project to fill that time. Goodness I wonder what I’ll choose.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s Easter weekend. So, I would like to wish everyone a very happy and fulfilling bank holiday weekend. I hope you all have a fabulous time.

Day d

So, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something creative you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND DAY 9

Hello my lovelies. I hope you all in good spirits and keeping safe. As I sit here composing this little blog post, I can see that the sun is finally coming out. It was dreary all morning and now it’s early afternoon and the sun has decided to grace us with her presence. And welcome she is too!!!

I mentioned yesterday that the new normal is starting to feel normal. Everyday of lockdown is getting easier. It’s definitely is in times like these that you learn to appreciate what’s important. Staying connected is top of the list for sure.

This is day 8 of my Messing Around with art supplies challenge. Everyday I have spent a few minutes making a mess and I am actually enjoying doing something different. Most of you will know that my fabric medium is fabric and everything comes with it. However, doing something different can supply you with varied inspiration. So much of what I’ve been messing around with can probably be translated into fabric crafts. So, now with no further ado here’s what I have been doing today …..

Messing around day 8a

Messing around day 8b

You may recognise these pages as the ones that I prepped yesterday. A little bit of dry brush stencilling, cutting up magazine papers and sticking it down to form a picture seems to have made these pages look a bit better. Now, trust me when I say all of this is simple to do. I will never be creating masterpieces but as long as I’m having fun it doesn’t matter. I hoping to fill my little art journal with techniques that are pleasing to my eye. I think the best part is that I have only used what I have at home. I didn’t spend one copper penny on this messing around business. If I can do it, so can you. Anyone brave enough to join me???

The new normal includes quite a lot of the way life used to be. The old stuff can be quite reassuring. For instance, I just saw the grass cutting machines fly past the door. The grass cutting machine drivers are on a mission to get through the list of public spaces to they need to tidy up before knock off time. The postman still walks past my door 6 days a week, he/she doesn’t have much post for us these days but it is reassuring to see them out and about daily.

It’s been a good day in my little world. I blended some new normal and some old normal tasks and life just seems to be whizzing by now.

Well, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.

MESSING AROUND DAY 8

Hello my lovelies. I hope you’ve all been enjoying Wednesday hump day. We’re halfway through the work week now. And we’ve made it through the first week in April!!!

Nowadays, one day is much like the next. However, looking out the window at the glorious sunshine, I realise how grateful I am to be in reasonable health at the moment. I appreciate that while we’re in lockdown mode, I have company. My Sarah does her own thing during the day, and we catch up in the evening. It seems we’re settling into our new normal, finally. Our creative juices are flowing again and we’re both experimenting with supplies we never tried before.

So, I’m now on Day 8 of my Messing Around Challenge. For today’s challenge, I played with one of the Brusho pieces I produced yesterday. Both pieces I produced dried overnight. I sat and studied the two pieces and decided to start with the greenish one. I ended up cutting the piece into smaller bits. So, in the end I prepped a few pages ready for gussying up over the next few days. I have no set plan of action for embellishing just yet. I’m hoping something comes to mind. This is what I have set up so far ……

Prepped Art Journal Page 1

Prepped Art Journal Page 2

And this is what the page looked like before I cut it up this afternoon …..

Day 7 Sprinkle Spritzed

Doesn’t it look different. Yesterday it looked like a splodged mess. Now that I have cut it up and stuck it down it looks totally different. I am quite pleased with the result so far. I hope to embellish it so that the pages look even better. Watch this space.

So, all in all it’s been a pretty good day at happy stitching manor. The days seem to be speeding up now. The new normal is more normal now.

Well, I guess that’s my report for today. I hope you all have a super cosy evening doing something you truly enjoy. Until next time,

Let’s all keep on stitching and messing around with art supplies.
